Looks like Donald Trump has joined in on Ben Carson’s strategy by blatantly creating stories out of thin air. When will people stop taking these two guys seriously? On Saturday, Trump said that on September 11, 2001 he “watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down.” Of course, Trump is trying to up the ante on fear mongering by suggesting that thousands of Arab and Muslim Americans were cheering for the collapse of the World Trade Center. The problem is that this never happened. Local police denied that any such event occurred, nobody could find news video of it, and several people have pointed out that the story was nothing more than an internet rumor.
However, on Sunday, when ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos gave Trump the chance to walk back this claim, he doubled down on it.
There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey, where you have large Arab populations. They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down. I know it might not be politically correct for you to talk about it, but there were people cheering as that building came down – as those building came down. And that tells you something. It was well covered at the time, George. Now, I know they don’t like to talk about it, but it was well covered at the time. There were people over in New Jersey that were watching it, a heavy Arab population, that were cheering as the building came down. Not good.
So Trump saw something that simply didn’t happen. I guess maybe he hallucinated. Thank god fact-checkers have crushed him. Politifact.com awarded him a “Pants on Fire” rating for making this story up. The Washington Post gave him four Pinocchios – the worst make a politician can receive for lying – for his “outrageous claim,” and it pointed out that he has already earned more Four-Pinocchio ratings than any other candidate this year.
What in the hell is going on here? Is Trump delusional or just incapable of admitting he’s wrong? Would he intentionally make stuff up to play to his voting base? Two GOP strategists working against Trump stated in a recent memo that “Trump voters are exceedingly low-information voters. They do no read the Washington Post or Politico or even conservative blogs. They do not watch cable news rigorously.” Consider me not shocked at all about that information. These people blindly supporting this buffoon are the exact group who would be susceptible to his incredible amount of BS.
Interestingly, seeing thousands of Muslim Americans cheering on 9/11 had no affect on on Trump at the time – probably because he didn’t see it because it didn’t happen. Trump was interviewed two days after the attacks and didn’t mention seeing thousands of Americans celebrating the attack. While he wasn’t asked directly about it, wouldn’t you think that might have been something to mention?
You see, there was a time when Trump was merely an arrogant, brash, celebrity real estate tycoon instead of a bat sh*t crazy arrogant brash, celebrity real estate tycoon running for president. Trump says crazy stuff all the time that is totally untrue and doubles down on it when someone challenges him. Sadly, this has no impact at all on his supporters. So there you go. Your Republican front-runner. God bless America.
